Is Your Lifestyle Making You Fat?

Have you been spending months trying different workouts and diets to make you lose weight but still not getting the results you want? Watch out, for it could be your lifestyle, home, or workplace that’s actually making you put on those pounds. These aspects of our life are usually overlooked in our attempts to lose weight, but these could be the culprits behind our excess fat. Take a look at how these can affect your health and eating habits so that you can take action to maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep those pounds away.

Unhealthy home and office environment

One of the ways your home could be making you fat is when there’s food where you can easily see and reach for it. According to Brian Wansink, who leads the Food and Brand Lab over at Cornell University, people are three times more likely to consume the first object they see than the fifth thing they see. This means that if a bag of potato chips is there out in the open, you’re likely to be tempted and reach for it, pronto. In the office, it’s a good idea to have a packet of crackers on hand, but if your desk drawer looks like a convenience store, then you’re bound for a weight-loss disappointment.

Not enough sun

If you’re not getting enough sunlight, you may be conditioning yourself to pack on the pounds. Light is needed to regulate hormones, particularly those that make us feel full. People who do not get enough light have lower levels of leptin, a hormone that regulates the amount of body fat. To boost your leptin levels, open the blinds in the morning and let the light shine in. Better yet, get out and go for a walk in the morning sunshine.

Too much caffeine

Caffeine is present in soft drinks, tea, chocolate, and of course, coffee. Many people would admit to not being able to function in the morning without their daily dose of caffeine, and if you’re one of those people, you might want to cut back on what you’re drinking. Caffeine can actually slow metabolism down and cause muscle breakdown, relocation of fat to the center of the body, and increase in hunger. Regular caffeine intake can make maintaining a lean body difficult, and make weight loss next to impossible. If you need a boost in the morning, go for fresh fruits and veggies instead.

Too much screen time

Frequent and excessive exposure to artificial light—phone and tablet screens, television sets, computers, lamps—can make you fat. Artificial light stops the body from generating melatonin, an obesity-fighting hormone. Melatonin is usually produced and released during sleep and is instrumental in establishing our circadian rhythm. Exposure to artificial light disrupts this process, so it’s recommended to sleep in absolute darkness.

In addition, too much time in front of the TV, computer, or your smartphone will lead to a sedentary, weight-gaining lifestyle. To make something positive out of your screen time, try out diet analysis programs, download cardio workout videos, use mobile apps to keep track of your calorie intake, and dance to some hip-hop videos to help you lose weight. Don’t forget to unplug when you’re done, drink lots of water, and have a good night’s rest.

Don’t let your lifestyle make you fat. Take action now!
